In October 2011, more than a thousand works from the collection of the Metropolitan Museum’s Department of Islamic Art returned to view in a renovated, expanded, and reinstalled suite of 15 galleries. During an extended visit to the museum, view one of the most comprehensive gatherings of this material in the world, and enjoy some coveted time at the Met on your own.

The New Galleries for the Art of the Arab Lands, Turkey, Iran, Central Asia and Later South Asia are grouped by geographic region, and trace the course of Islamic civilization from Spain in the West to India in the East. The New York Times pronounced the renovation “as intelligent as it is visually resplendent,” and noted that “An immense cultural vista—necessary, liberating, intoxicatingly pleasurable—has been restored to the city.”

Art historian Ursula Wolfman leads this tour. A box lunch is included en route to New York, and a stop will be made on the return to purchase a meal.

7 a.m. to 10 p.m. by bus from the Holiday Inn Capitol, 550 C Street, S.W. (corner of 6th St. & C St.), with a pickup stop at the I-495, Exit 27 carpool lot at about 7:25 a.m.
