Union army journal entry, Kelly’s Ford, March 17, 1863(Virginia Historical Society)
Spend a day visiting several important battle sites in Virginia, led by Civil War historians Gregg Clemmer and Ed Bearss. Begin at Kelly’s Ford, site of one of the early major cavalry fights in Virginia, by visiting the John Pelham Monument (Maj. Pelham was mortally wounded at Kelly’s Ford), Graffiti House, and Carter Run.
After lunch at the Piedmont Steakhouse in historic Culpepper, the tour follows the routes traveled by Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia and George Meade's Army of the Potomac in the October 1863 campaign, as the Confederates forced the Union to retire behind Bull Run. The tour leaders interpret the battles of Bristoe Station, which took place during the Union Army retreat; Buckland Mills, also known as the Buckland Races; and Rappahannock Bridge.
