The vibrant medium of pastel has been a favorite of artists such as Willem de Kooning for the last four centuries because of its luminosity and versatility. Working from still-life arrangements in studio sessions, students learn to achieve the brilliant and subtle effects characteristic of the medium.

Throughout the course, lectures on color theory, color mixing, and composition are given. Demonstrations on color layering and blending are also included. For inspiration and ideas, works by master pastellists are viewed and discussed.

Students may work in chalk or oil pastel. Students should have basic drawing skills.
