Take your darkroom printing to the next level by learning how to use fiber paper and chemical toners. Fiber paper—archival in nature and heavier than standard RC paper—is more appropriate for fine-art photography. Students learn the additional processing steps for fiber paper and how to address the “dry down” or darkening that occurs as fiber paper dries. Other topics include the use of chemical toners to enhance black-and-white prints and increase archival permanence and how different paper tones (cool, neutral, and warm) and different chemical toners (sepia and selenium) can dramatically enhance a print’s look. Spotting of prints and proper storage of negatives and prints are also addressed.
All standard darkroom chemicals and sepia and selenium toners are provided. Students are required to supply their own photo paper.
Bring a selection of your best negatives and at least one pack of Ilford fiber paper (8 in. x 10 in., 25 sheets, glossy finish) to the first session. Consider purchasing multiple packs of paper to experiment with different tones of paper. Recommendations include: Ilford Multigrade FB Cooltone, Ilford Multigrade FB Classic (neutral tone), and Ilford Multigrade FB Warmtone.
