Dover Plains, Dutchess County, New York, 1848, by Asher B. Durand (Smithsonian American Art Museum)

Find inspiration in the beautiful landscapes painted by the artists of the Hudson River School. An instructor-led talk and tour to view Hudson River paintings at the National Gallery of Art is followed by two in-studio sessions featuring a lecture and demonstrations of painting in the movement’s style. Students create their own works in the 19th-century spirit, drawing on what they’ve learned of the genre’s techniques, color palette, and materials.
