Explore the brilliant and luminescent effects of oil and chalk pastels used for the last four centuries by Da Vinci, Degas, Manet, Delacroix, Millet, Cassatt, Renoir, Gauguin, Whistler, Picasso, and Wolf Kahn. Building on the concepts explored in Introduction to Pastel, intermediate-to-advanced students investigate a myriad of ways to construct still-life arrangements to achieve innovative compositions. Each week delves into techniques including frottage, wet brushing, resist, scraping-out, and combining pastels with gouache, pencil, and oils.
Prerequisite: Introduction to Pastel, Sketching with Pastels in the Smithsonian Gardens, or prior approval of the instructor.
