Man with the Cat (Henry Sturgis Drinker), 1898, by Cecilia Beaux (Smithsonian American Art Museum)

Have you ever wished that your paintings could reflect the lushly applied paint and lemony light of Cecelia Beaux, the bold and beautiful brush strokes of John Singer Sargent, or the tender touch of Mary Cassatt?

These and many other influential American artists trained in Europe, studying and copying the art of centuries of masters, as well as absorbing the groundbreaking influences of contemporary painters such as the impressionists. Follow that tradition as you join instructor Adrienne Kralick in museum galleries and the studio to learn how Gilded Age artists achieved their signature styles and effects—and apply those techniques to your work.

Begin with a studio lecture on the period’s artists, a materials demonstration, and a warm-up painting exercise. In the next session, visit the American Art Museum and the National Gallery to view Gilded Age paintings from an artist’s perspective and understand how they were created. Then return to the studio to apply what you’ve learned through copying sections of paintings by Sargent, Beaux, and Cassatt as you create your own original Gilded Age-inspired work.

8 sessions; 3 hours each (no class Nov. 26)
