The Washington area is home to a wide variety of glass artists working in an equally wide range of styles and techniques. Spend a fascinating day visiting noted artists in their studios and homes to see them at work and explore their creations. Museum education consultant Sheila Pinsker leads the tour.
Visits to the home and Kensington studio of Nancy Weisser, who specializes in kiln-formed glass, offer visitors the chance to see works including large-scale installations, get insights into her process, view pieces in progress, and make their own piece of fused glass. Nikki O’Neill, a former research scientist, discusses how she blends art, nature, and science to create imaginary sea creatures by melting and layering colorful glass powders, and using recycled glass to form sculptures and vessels.
In Silver Spring, Eileen Martin’s home and studio display pieces that reflect her work in techniques including lead- and copper-foil stained glass fabrication, glass painting, fused and kiln-formed glass, and sandblasting.
After lunch at China Gourmet in Kensington, head for the Bowie home and studio of Eric Markow and Thom Norris, who create sculptures in woven glass. Be among the first to see their Fire Samurai, the initial sculpture in a series of five life-sized samurai inspired by elements of nature.
