Mosaic Theater is anchored at the Atlas Performing Arts Center on H Street NE

With more than 80 professional theatres, Washington boasts one the richest and most diverse theatre scenes in America—as the 2016–2017 season, with more than 400 planned productions, will certainly attest.

The newly established Mosaic Theater Company offers a play about a charm school for transgendered youth as part of its 10-play season. Two playwrights from the Women’s Voices Theater Festival return with productions at Woolly Mammoth and Signature Theatre. The Kennedy Center has scheduled a year-long celebration of the centennial of JFK’s birth. Signature will produce five world premieres, two by local playwrights. Arena Stage’s season includes stories about real people, including Valerie Plame Wilson, gospel singer BeBe Winans, Joan Didion, and the plaintiff in the Roe v. Wade case. Anacostia will continue to build on its reputation as one of the hottest areas for new plays and new talent.  And those are just a few of the highlights!

With so much to see, how do you know the top tickets to grab before they sell out? Which up-and-coming companies, directors, and performers should be on your radar? Lorraine Treanor, editor of DC Theatre Scene, Washington's liveliest theatre website, is ready to help you fill your calendar. She’s joined by contributors Susan Galbraith and Robert Bettmann, who provide previews of the opera and dance season ahead. The program also includes plenty of practical tips for theatre-goers, such as where to park for your night out and the best sources for discounted tickets.
