Curious about graffiti art? This hands-on workshop introduces the styles, materials, history, and techniques of the controversial and expressive form that’s been conveying messages and transforming walls from ancient Rome to today. Rooted in social and political dissent and laced with a sense of danger, modern graffiti has exploded both as a raw and powerful street medium and in works that have made their way into galleries and museums.
Create your own graffiti name plate as you connect and collaborate with other participants in an introductory studio session that covers basic drawing skills and lettering styles, as well as other tips and techniques. The second session takes place in Brookland and features a walking tour of graffiti-art locations, a graffiti demonstration, and a chance to learn how to use a can of spray paint as you try your hand at this provocative contemporary form at the instructor’s studio.
Experience in drawing is not required. All supplies are provided.
Instructor Rajan Sedalia studied art and industrial design at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, Columbus (Ohio) College of Art and Design, and Ohio State University. His work blends the boundaries of art, design, comics, and graffiti.
2 sessions (2 hours on July 19; 1.5 hours on July 26)
