What actor wouldn't kill for a good fight scene on stage? But that's the trick— making a dramatic clash of swords, guns, or fisticuffs believable to a savvy audience without putting a fellow performer into the hospital, or worse.

Robb Hunter, a professional fight director and choreographer, demonstrates how these confrontations—that may contain swords, knives, martial arts, and firearms—are performed on stage or screen in a way that is believable, exciting, and compelling to watch while not actually harming anyone. (Front-row seats are optional.)

Hunter is a certified fight director and teacher of stage combat for the Society of American Fight Directors. He has worked on productions for many area companies, including the Shakespeare Theatre Company, Arena Stage, Washington National Opera, Studio Theatre, Olney Theatre, and Ford’s Theatre.

Other Connections

Take a look at how the actors and fight choreographer for a 2014 Royal Shakespeare Company production of Henry IV, Part 1 brought the climactic confrontation between Prince Hal and Hotspur to life.
