African Cosmos: Stellar Arts, now at the African Art Museum, looks at the continent’s legacy of cultural astronomy and its intersection with traditional and contemporary arts. Christine Mullen Kreamer, the museum’s deputy director and the curator of African Cosmos, who will provide behind-the-scenes insights into this groundbreaking exhibition of objects and art from all over Africa.
Join Katrien Kolenberg of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, who’ll explain how stars’ oscillations can be translated into aural frequencies—and into the rhythms you’ll hear played by an African drum circle.
Stars, suns, and moons are among the many symbols that adorn the stamped and patterned adinkra cloths of Ghana, which tell stories in their designs. Try your hand at your own tale as you craft an adinkra-inspired fabric. You’ll also chart a constellation and create some stellar origami as you enjoy this starry, starry night of science, socializing, and art.
The specialty cocktail and non-alcoholic beverages will be served at no additional charge, while supplies last. A cash bar offers wine and beer throughout the evening. Light hors d'oeuvres will be served. You must be at least 21 years old with valid ID to attend. This is not a seated event.
