Renaissance Rivalries

Rivalries can be dangerous and frustrating, but they can also fuel the creation of great works of art. Renaissance masters were in constant competition to prove who was the best artist of their time, and friendships often devolved into jealousies and acts of deceit. Patrons were in large measure responsible for forcing artists to outdo their rivals while simultaneously attending to the demands of commissions at hand.

Renaissance art historian Elaine Ruffolo brings into sharp focus the immediacy, intensity, and complexity of artistic rivalry among the Renaissance masters as she evokes the often-overwhelming emotional and professional pressures that compelled them to create.

• If you register multiple individuals, you will be asked to supply individual names and email addresses so they can receive a Zoom link email. Please note that if there is a change in program schedule or a cancellation, we will notify you via email, and it will be your responsibility to notify other registrants in your group.
• Unless otherwise noted, registration for streaming programs typically closes two hours prior to the start time on the date of the program.
• Once registered, patrons should receive an automatic email confirmation from CustomerService@SmithsonianAssociates.org.
