Tintoretto, Self Portrait

Drawing in Tintoretto’s Venice celebrates the 500th anniversary of the birth of Jacopo Tintoretto, and is the first major retrospective of the artist’s work in North America. Featuring nearly 50 paintings and more than a dozen works on paper, the exhibition spans the artist’s entire career, ranging from regal portraits of Venetian aristocracy to religious and mythological narrative scenes.

The exhibition explores the drawing practice of this major figure of the Venetian Renaissance and offers a new perspective on Tintoretto’s evolution as a draftsman, his individuality as an artist, and his influence on a generation of painters in Northern Italy. Tintoretto’s distinctive figure drawings are the heart of the exhibition, and expose the artist’s teaching methods and practices in the workshop.

This exhibition includes many significant international works traveling to the U.S. for the first time. The collection includes works of other sixteenth century masters whose drawing style was influenced by Tintoretto, as well as an interesting group of drawings proposed as the work as a young El Greco.
