With no less power than Michelangelo, but much more subtlety, he brought a revolution in art and architecture to the Eternal City. There is no better example to be found of Raphael’s genius than the suite of apartments he painted for the Warrior Pope, Julius II. Raphael began the papal apartments, known as the Stanze, in 1509 and left them unfinished at his death in 1520. Yet these four small rooms trace his progress over his years in Rome and reflect the quintessence of the High Renaissance in their celebrated frescoes. Join art historian Elaine Ruffolo for a virtual visit to the Stanze and revel in Raphael’s virtuosity as a painter, on a par with Mozart’s in music and Michelangelo’s in stone.
