Quintessential Québec City

Québec City is the only walled metropolis north of Mexico, but there are many other distinctions that make it a must-visit place for visitors in search of history, great eating, and a uniquely European atmosphere. This mostly French-speaking city along the Saint Lawrence River is just 2.5 hours by car from Montreal or a 1.5-hour flight from New York or Toronto. Emmy Award–nominated PBS television host Darley Newman—along with some special guests—is ready to tell you why you should make the trip.

Visitors to Québec City find much to explore: bustling markets, local artisans, winding cobblestone streets, parks and battle sites, stone buildings dating back to the 17th century, and 37 Canadian National Historic Sites. A history of conflict under French rule gave rise to the city’s fortified colonial core, leading to the construction of the Royal Battery, unearthed during archeological digs and restored in 1977. You can also step back in time at the site of the first French settlement in North America at Place Royale.

Stunning trompe-l’œil murals by diverse artists tell stories from 400 years of the city’s history (and make the perfect backdrop for posting-worthy photos).
