In her groundbreaking PBS Primetime docuseries “La Frontera,” Emmy-nominated Mexican chef Pati Jinich uses food as the vehicle to explore the culture and people along the border of the United States and Mexico. Visiting El Paso, Ciudad Juárez, Laredo, Nuevo Laredo, McAllen, and Brownsville in the first season, she shared meals with locals from all walks of life and reflected on the melding of cultures.
Along the journey, she drew on her experiences—both as a former political analyst at a policy research center and as someone who has lived her life treading between both Mexican and American cultures as a U.S. immigrant—to conduct in-depth interviews with residents of the region.
Returning for a second season in spring 2023, “La Frontera: The Everchanging Borderlands” features Jinich’s explorations on the western half of the Mexico–U.S. border, covering California and Baja California, Arizona and Sonora, and New Mexico and Chihuahua. Join her for a screening of an episode from the new season, followed by a conversation with Lori Lizarraga, co-host of NPR’s Code Switch, focusing on the creation of the series and what she discovered traveling in both countries.
