Andrea Palladio by Alessandro Maganza

Please Note: This program has a rescheduled date (originally May 20, 2022).

Renaissance Italian architect Andrea Palladio (1508–1580) is arguably the most influential architect in the Western world. Inspired by classical Roman architecture, he designed country villas, palaces, and churches for the nobility of the city of Vicenza that were known for their pleasing proportions, grace, and symmetry. He also left an indelible mark on Venice, introducing architecture designed along classical lines into a predominantly Byzantine-built environment.

Palladio’s clientele—whether princes of commerce, traditional soldier-aristocrats, or gentlemen of leisure—shared an intense admiration for ancient Rome. They were children of the High Renaissance and steeped in humanist learning. In this richly illustrated presentation, Italian Renaissance art historian Elaine Ruffolo explores Palladio’s architecture, from magnificent villas in the Veneto to churches in Venice. His style became popular in England where architects such as the great Inigo Jones adapted it for country houses.
