"Empress of the Blues", 1974, by Romare Bearden (Smithsonian American Art Museum)

Although Romare Bearden (1911–1988) worked in many mediums from oil and watercolor to various forms of printmaking, he is best known for his mixed-media collages and photomontages. His expressive and energetic compositions depict urban and rural life and the jazz scene.

After viewing an illustrated lecture on Bearden’s work, students try their hand creating Bearden-inspired mixed-media compositions using a variety of fabrics, papers, cutouts, stencils and photographs, then experiment by adding paint and drawing materials.

Elements of composition are covered, as are adhesives, supports, and methods of creating texture. Development of personal style and visual storytelling are encouraged. Students benefit from group critique.
