Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center
The timeline of America’s military history, marked by national and international conflicts and struggles, reaches beyond the founding of the United States and into the present. Much of this history is connected to the capital area—the backdrop for a day that explores three significant sites in a tour led by two staff members of the Army Historical Foundation: Brent Feito, public outreach manager, and historian Matt Seelinger.
Begin at Mount Vernon, home of the United States' first commander in chief, George Washington. His estate on the Potomac, where he lived during his time as commander of the Continental Army, sets the stage for examining the early military campaigns of the fledgling nation. A private wreath-laying ceremony at Washington’s tomb is the highlight of the visit, which includes a guided tour of the main residence and free time to explore the galleries and the Revolutionary War Theater’s 4D experience.
The Fort Belvoir–based Museum of the United States Army, one of the newest museums in the area, gives visitors the opportunity to explore the branch's 247-year history and its direct influence on the social, technological, cultural, and financial sectors of America. Enjoy a unique program that offers an insider’s look at the museum as you discover the stories behind the artifacts on display and gain a greater appreciation for the sacrifices, commitment, and challenges of the soldiers who used them.
The day’s final stop is the Smithsonian's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia, for a look at the extensive display of American and international military aircraft, uniforms, and other artifacts spanning from World War I to the 21st century. A guided tour offers close-up views of holdings such as the Bell AH-1F Cobra, a Bell UH-1H Iroquois "Huey," and a Redstone missile, among others.
A boxed lunch is provided.
Know Before You Go
- The tour departs by motorcoach from downtown Washington, DC with a designated secondary pick-up outside the city. Content delivered by the study leader on the way to the destination, after the secondary pick-up, is an integral part of the study tour experience. Meeting the group once the tour is en route is discouraged.
- Tour participants meet at and leave by bus from the Mayflower Hotel, Connecticut Ave. and DeSales Street, NW. with a pick-up stop at the Pentagon City Metro Station (in front of Nordstrom) at approximately 8:20 a.m.
