Far from being the wilderness described in early histories, the West was never an undiscovered Eden. Instead, it was an ancient homeland with landscapes that humans have inhabited, modified, and managed for thousands of years.

In her book Losing Eden: An Environmental History of the American West, Sara Dant draws on historic data and the latest scientific research to trace the environmental history and development of the American West and explain how the land has shaped and been shaped by the people who live there.

Dant is a professor and historian whose work focuses on environmental politics in the United States.
