Log Cabin quilts—popular in the United States since the Civil War—are made of arrangements of a repeated single block pattern consisting of hand-pieced strips of fabric around a central square. The Log Cabin block offers a wonderful framework for exploring color and value contrast and for spontaneous sewing without a lot of advance planning.

Using a sewing machine and a common fabric pool of scraps from the instructor and students, participants learn an efficient flag-piecing technique that allows for many blocks to be created at once. Beginning quilters can gain confidence in putting colors together while experienced quilters can enjoy this as an improvisational playtime to see what happens. The completed blocks may then be finished as a table runner or vertical wall hanging.
