As America struggles through a crucial racial reckoning, film studios and media platforms have seen an increased interest in black-centered television shows and movies. But it can be difficult to know what to look for in a white-dominated media structure.
NPR television critic and author Eric Deggans sheds light on some of the most important television shows and movies on race and culture to watch right now. From HBO’s “The Wire” and “Watchmen” to Netflix’s “When They See Us” to Do the Right Thing and In the Heat of the Night, Deggans discusses how to evaluate such material for its treatment of themes involving race and culture, and examines how structural racism can distort media messages.
