Materials for this program

By Max-Karl Winkler

Relief printing, the most ancient of printing techniques, has never lost its popularity as a medium for artists and illustrators. At the end of the 19th century, linoleum was quickly adopted as a substitute for wood in printmaking. Smithsonian museum collections contain many examples of linocut from artists such as Picasso and Matisse. This class introduces students to the materials and techniques of one-color relief printmaking, from design and carving of the block, through inking, printing, and presentation of the finished linocut.
