As one of this country’s most enduring and legendary figures, Abraham Lincoln left an impression both on the United States and the city of Washington. Spend the day following in his footsteps with author and journalist Chuck Raasch as he guides a journey through the city to sites connected with the fascinating president.
Begin with a visit to the elegant Willard Hotel where Lincoln stayed prior to his inauguration, eschewing a private home rented for him in the city. Visit the 17th Street site of the telegraph office at the War Department, to which Lincoln often walked alone at night to get the latest dispatches from the armies—and where he penned the Emancipation Proclamation.
Journey north in the city to the site of the Battle of Fort Stevens, followed by an afternoon tour of the Old Soldier’s Home, whose grounds provided a cool reprieve for the president during the swampy summer months. Conclude the day at the Lincoln Memorial to commemorate its 100th anniversary and honor the life and enduring legacy of the remarkable leader it enshrines.
Lunch at a local restaurant is provided. Other significant sites are discussed along the tour route, including Ford’s Theatre and the Petersen House opposite, where Lincoln died, and photographer Alexander Gardner’s studio.
