More people have died exploring underwater caves than climbing Mount Everest, and we know more about deep space than we do about the depths of our oceans. In an activity once tagged as the domain of adrenaline junkies, cave divers have become an important asset to scientists researching global climate change, archaeology, water issues, and unique biology.

One of the top cave divers working today—and one of the very few women in her field—Jill Heinerth, a Canadian cave diver, underwater explorer, writer, photographer, and filmmaker, shares stories from her expeditions. From remote water-filled caves of Antarctica and Siberia to Bermuda and the Bahamas. Heinerth offers images and videos about tiny venomous cave inhabitants, archaeological remains of the Mayan people, and ancient lofty stalagmites that tell the story of earth before humans.

Heinerth’s book Into the Planet: My Life as a Cave Diver (Ecco) is available for sale.
