What can a painted vessel tell us about the lives and beliefs of the ancient Greeks? A lot, actually. While many of the earliest works feature geometric patterns, those from a later period display both human activities and mythological subjects that are invaluable for recreating the life and beliefs of this ancient civilization. These images can range from simple paintings of young women fetching water to more complex scenes involving heroic deeds and Homeric tales. In addition to explaining the various functions of the vessel shapes as well as the painting techniques utilized, art historian Renee Gondek also explores the stories illustrated and highlights the artistry of the best-known painters, including Exekias, Euphronios, and the Berlin Painter.
