Two profound sculpture artists share the first floor of the Renwick Gallery. The installation of Ginny Ruffner, Reforestation of the Imagination consists of six islands, each featuring colorless glass sculptures of tree trunks that appear barren and bleak. Ruffner has imagined a glorious and complex alternative environment that viewers can access using an AR (Augmented Reality) lens. Using the AR lens, the stumps grow unique appendages and mythical flora. Ruffner designs these fictional species to adapt to their surrounding conditions in an unexpected way, and calls into question notions of fantasy and reality, desolation and hope.

The Michael Sherrill Retrospective includes more than seventy-five objects, from Sherrill’s earliest teapots to his mixed media sculptures inspired by nature, illustrating the artist’s evolution over his more than forty-year career. His delicately rendered sculptures in clay, glass, and metal elicit a sense of wonder in the natural world, while inspiring viewers to see the natural world anew. Sherrill’s recent work reveals his naturalist’s sensitivity to botanical wonders, and celebrates his reverence for nature in American art.
