A Geologic Tour of Switzerland

Join geologist Kirt Kempter for an overview of the fascinating geology of Switzerland, birthplace of the science of glaciology, as he surveys the evolution of the Alps and the Ice Age glaciation that sculpted the country’s landscape.

Ancient oceans preceded the great tectonic collision giving rise to the Alps, with most of the highest peaks composed of marine limestone. The Jura Mountains in northern Switzerland expose Jurassic-age sedimentary rocks that include more than 14,000 fossilized dinosaur tracks.

Kempter explores the still-ongoing tectonic and glacial forces shaping the Alps and the impact of the prehistoric glaciers on the Swiss plateau region to the north. Maps, photos, and Google Earth imagery help tell the geologic story.
