PROGRAM DESCRIPTION “Leave the gun, take the cannoli” is perhaps one of the most famous lines in cinema. Spoken in Francis Ford Coppola’s 1972 film The Godfather, it captures the key dichotomy in the saga of Don Corleone's family, where food acts as a symbol of ethnic authenticity and family relations as well as of violence and personal honor. Food also defines the power structure of the family, casting it both as a ruthless army and as the foundation of home and tradition. The film’s multiple perspectives on food and family capture the true nature of Italianità—the essence of being Italian—and shed new light on Coppola’s first entry in his Godfather trilogy. Ermelinda M. Campani, Spogli Family Director of Stanford's Breyer Center for Overseas Studies in Florence, serves up a unique look at an American masterpiece.
