Discover the relationship between the traditions of Afghanistan and India as you explore calligraphy’s connection to language, literary arts, religion, popular culture, memory, and art.

Sughra Hussainy, a graduate of Turquoise Mountain Institute in Kabul, Afghanistan, teaches traditional elements of Persian calligraphy, Verses by Rumi and from the Quran were part of her life growing up and influenced her calligraphic art. Now they provide inspiration for art created in class.

Students explore how words become design with Sushmita Mazumdar as they learn how the Persian language inspired Urdu poetry in India, especially the verses found in popular Bollywood movie songs. They are guided in writing lyrics in the Hindi-language Devnagari script using markers, brush, ink, and other tools.

All supplies included.
