Riace bronze statue, Reggio Calabria (detail)

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

You can’t visit Italy right now—but you can join art historian and culinary expert Elaine Trigiani at her farmhouse in Tuscany for a virtual exploration of Calabria—the toe of Italy’s boot—through its artistic and culinary heritage. Italy’s meridione or deep south was ruled by a succession of cultures who left their mark on Calabria’s art and food traditions.

From the coast of the Ionian Sea in and around the ancient Greek colony Locri Epizefiri—an area of Calabria still known today as the Locride—Trigiani offers a close look at the Riace Bronzes, a pair of ancient Greek sculptures that have been a puzzle since they were pulled from the sea in 1972. Trigiani assembles the puzzle pieces to reveal the sculptures’ origins, who they represent, and why they ended up on the bottom of the sea.

For a taste of the Locride, she prepares a savory parmigiana, the Calabrese version, with a twist (and shares the recipe).

Wherever you may be, art and food are perfect entry points to this historic and beautiful corner of Italy.
