By Deborah Merrick-Wilson

Explore the basics of traditional English precious-metal embroidery while executing an elegant silver dove of peace on Jim Thompson Thai silk using four different metals. This one-day class provides participants with a taste of the same materials used on medieval and early modern textiles that once were determined by law to be owned only by royalty or members of the aristocracy.

The class includes demonstrations of all techniques, and a kit that contains all materials necessary to complete the project. A brief discussion of the history of this discipline and its effects on the politics, economy and culture of the historical era during which it flourished accompanies the workshop.

English precious-metal embroidery is suitable for all ability levels; it helps, however, to be comfortable manipulating a threaded needle. An $65 supply fee is payable to the instructor at the first session. Experienced embroiderers are encouraged to bring favorite tools, and participants may choose to provide their own supplemental illumination or magnification.

One 7-hour session with lunch break (participants provide their own)
