Western Motel, 1957, by Edward Hopper; Yale University Art Gallery, bequest of Stephen C. Clark (Courtesy Virginia Museum Of Fine Arts)

Check in to Edward Hopper’s hotels, motels, tourist homes, and boarding houses in the first investigation of the celebrated artist’s images of hospitality settings. The selected paintings and works on paper on view in the Virginian Museum of Fine Arts’ exhibition Edward Hopper and the American Hotel explore the role of hotels in the cultural landscape of the early to mid-20th century as reflected in the painter’s distinctive vision.

The exhibition is enhanced by simulated spaces and other immersive design elements, and also includes rarely seen diaries and postcards that provide personal travelogues, as told by Hopper’s wife, Josephine.

The visit, let by art historian Bonita Billman, includes lunch at the museum’s Marble Hall, and free time to explore the VMFA’s galleries.

Fringe stop at about 9 a.m.
