A Day of Drawing at the Folger
Studio Arts Workshop with Lunch
Saturday, September 28, 2019 - 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
The Folger Shakespeare Library, one of Washington’s cultural and architectural treasures, provides outstanding opportunities for people who love to draw. Spend a day capturing its splendors on paper, finding inspirations in its 1930s neoclassical exterior and Tudor-style interiors, the vast Great Hall and magnificent Reading Room, Elizabethan garden, intimate theater, statues and stained glass, and many works of art that depict Shakespeare’s theatrical world.
Under the guidance of instructor Paul Glenshaw, this unique workshop offers a rare chance to practice perspective drawing, examine architectural details, and draw from masterworks—all in an extraordinary setting. The day, which includes drawing both inside and outside the Folger (weather permitting), begins with a docent-led tour, followed by a drawing session, a gourmet boxed lunch served on site, and more drawing in the afternoon.
The workshop is recommended for the strong beginner, intermediate, or advanced student who has taken a previous drawing class or has equivalent drawing experience.
Participants work with simple, easily-carried materials such as pencil, charcoal, and paper. Small portable stools are permitted. Sturdy and comfortable footwear and clothing are advised.
A supply list may be downloaded from this page no later than 2 weeks prior to the program.
One 5-hour session (boxed lunch is included)
Paul Glenshaw writes about his experiences drawing the library’s exterior bas-reliefs of scenes from Shakespeare by sculptor John Gregory in this series of blog posts for the Folger.
