Mosaic by Bonnie Fitzgerald, inspired by Vermeer’s Girl with A Red Hat

This class introduces participants to the ancient art of mosaics with a specifically contemporary focus: creating a mosaic interpretation of a master painting using stained glass. From Byzantine altar pieces to impressionist classics to pop-art paintings, the Smithsonian’s museums and other area collections provide a vast resource of artworks for study and interpretation.

Students are guided through the complete process of creating a stained-glass mosaic for interior display using the double-direct method of mosaic making and working directly over an image. The instructor provides a selection of paintings from which students can choose to work, or participants may provide their own inspiration art, subject to instructor approval 2 weeks in advance.

In the process of creating a beautiful piece of mosaic art, students are introduced to working with stained glass as a material, cutting techniques, sourcing and preparation of materials, and fabrication methods. The class is open to all skill levels. Returning students may work independently during this session on works of their choice.

A $65 supply fee is payable to instructor at the first class, covering an ample selection of stained glass, adhesives, and grout.
