Caravaggio was a genius, a scoundrel, an outlaw, and a murderer. His police record would take first place In a Who's Who of artists: His antisocial behavior earned him a police record that ran the gamut from throwing a plate of artichokes at a waiter to killing a man on a tennis court. As an artist he also stirred controversy, and although he painted some of the 17th century’s greatest masterpieces, he still provoked extremes of condemnation along with praise from his contemporaries. But above all, he was the greatest artist of his age, and remains one of the most influential and absorbing of all Italian painters.

Art historian Elaine Ruffolo highlights how his canvases pulsed with forceful emotion, dramatic plays of light and shadow, and an unabashed embrace of realism. It was art that defied the ideal of beauty in painting that prevailed in his milieu.
