Place de la Bourse, Bordeaux

World-class wine, medieval villages, museums, and markets: The Bordeaux region of France is truly a feast for all five senses, with a history that unfolds around every scenic turn and a setting along three stunning rivers, the Garonne, Dordogne, and Gironde.

From the quaint wine hills of Saint-Emilion along the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela to La Cité du Vin, a museum that encourages wine tasting and leads visitors through an immersive history of winemaking from 6000 B.C. to today, Emmy Award–nominated PBS television host Darley Newman shares how to get the most out of your visit to France’s renowned wine region.

Newman showcases the best that this area of Southwestern France has to offer, including archaeological marvels, historic landmarks, cultural treasures—and multiple wine tastings. She covers village tours and farmers’ markets; how to memorably explore Bordeaux by retro sidecar; and surveys wines across the region, including those from Fort Médoc, Cadillac, Blaye, Libourne, and other locations.

And what’s a sojourn in Bordeaux without wonderful baked goods? Newman guides you to the outstanding local boulangeries in the region, as well as the tempting patisseries that turn out the best cannelés, dunes blanches, and gâteau à la broche—all amid UNESCO World Heritage sites and generous helpings of history.
