American Kestrel by Matt Felperin

Do you wish you knew more about those intriguing-looking birds you spot in your backyard or on your walks? Did you know that bill size and shape is an excellent indicator for what family any given bird belongs to, as well as their diet? Field marks such as color, wing bars, bill shape, lines around the face, and other indicators are useful for identifying birds that look similar.

Discuss all these topics and more with Matt Felperin, NOVA Parks’ roving naturalist in an essential guide to what you see and hear designed for both beginning birders and those who want to take their skills to the next level.

He covers helpful tips to make it easier to identify birds based on field marks—the variety of distinctive stripes, spots, patterns, colors, and highlights that birds display—as well as by their songs and calls. Learn the best tips on how, when, and where to find birds, as well as ways to bring the joy of birding into your day-to-day experience.

When you’re ready to head into the field with your new knowledge, call on Felperin’s guidance on the items and apps you’ll need and his demonstration of how to use the eBird website to locate hotspots and specific species reports wherever you are.
