At nesting time, nature’s weavers love to use bits and pieces of fluff and string to add to their nests. Master basket weaver Lori VanKirk Schue guides students in creating a basket for the birds in your garden.

This simple cone-shaped basket is quick to weave and uses round reed and the twining technique. Fill it with suitable items to help the birds create their own little baskets: their nests.

Even if you don’t have a garden, hang this basket from your window and the birds will find it. It’s an easy and fun way to help nature and learn a new basket technique, and you’ll want to make more than one.

Students supply their own spring clothespins, straight-nosed garden clippers, and a dishtowel. All other materials are provided. A $35 supply fee is payable to the instructor.

One 3-hour session

This event is presented as part of the Smithsonian Earth Optimism Initiative.
