An early suburb that took shape next to a cotton mill after the Civil War, hilly—but far from mountainous—Mount Washington was annexed by the City of Baltimore in 1914. This picturesque village, a stop on the light rail line, is both a residential neighborhood of choice and a destination within the city limits for dining, shopping, ceramics classes, and conferences.

Arts journalist and former Baltimore resident Richard Selden continues his survey of Charm City neighborhoods with a virtual tour of Mount Washington, focusing on sites including the Octagon (a female academy, then a women’s college, and now part of Mt. Washington Conference Center), Baltimore Clayworks, Western Run Park, and nearby Cylburn Mansion and Arboretum, the Victorian estate of a chromium-mining executive.
