Before the Perseid meteor shower comes in mid-August, take a day to learn everything you need to know to become an amateur astronomer in the greater Washington, D.C., area. The local astronomy community is filled with people who share their expertise on what to observe, how to photograph it, and whether to buy, build, or borrow a telescope. You’ll learn where the skies are darkest in your area, and what to observe when light pollution makes urban astronomy a challenge.
