Artists in Depth at the Barnes Foundation: The School of Paris

Drawing on what is considered one of the greatest post-impressionist and early modern art collections in the world, Barnes Foundation educator Penny Hansen guides a series of live virtual tours that examine in depth the paintings of artists who helped shape a truly revolutionary period in the history of art.

Using high-definition Deep Zoom technology developed by the Barnes, she leads participants through the Philadelphia museum’s galleries and provides astonishingly close-up views of the canvases, revealing their paint surface, brushstrokes, and details in ways that bring the art and the artist vividly to life. This program provides the chance to interact with Hansen in a Q&A session.

The School of Paris

In the early years of the 20th century, Paris became a magnet for artists from all over the world and the birthplace for some of the principal innovations of modern art. Leading the charge for innovation were Pablo Picasso who settled in Paris from his native Spain in 1904, and the Frenchman Henri Matisse. Other artistic pioneers who were part of this movement were Amedeo Modigliani from Italy and Chaim Soutine who arrived from Russia in 1911. Hansen explores all of these artists, as they are well represented in the Barnes Foundation's collection.
