Chinese calligraphy has a long history as a form of expression. Chinese characters, with their origins in pictographs, are endowed with a natural beauty.
Students use Chinese brush and ink as they learn to write basic Chinese characters, short phrases, and poems. The traditional signature seal and its history are also discussed.
Instructor John Wang is recognized as a master calligrapher and seal engraver in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. He teaches calligraphy at several area institutions including the Smithsonian Institution Freer and Sackler Galleries, Rockville Chinese School, and George Washington University in the East Asian Language and Literature Department.

NOTE: This class requires a median size calligraphy brush with over an inch long head, a bottle of ink, and some water absorbing papers. If you already have these items at home, please bring them to the first class. If you do not have these items and do not wish to purchase them on your own, you may purchase a set of supplies from the instructor at the first class: one brush/$8, one bottle of ink/$2 and one pack of 100 sheet grid paper/$4. An ink tray and mat will be provided for your use in class.
