Over the millennia, the ancient practice of Buddhism has led to the creation of many diverse schools and traditions. Broad categories such as Nikaya Buddhism, Mahayana, and Vajrayana each have their own unique artistic traditions. Pure Land Buddhism inspired paintings and sculpture of the Western Paradise; Tiantai, the centrality of richly illustrated Lotus Sutras; and Zen, the elegantly expressive medium of ink painting, among others.
Robert DeCaroli, an art history professor at George Mason University, examines how differences in practice among Buddhism’s various schools were expressed through art. He explains the cultural and sectarian influences that informed the makers of Buddhist art, as well as the ideological differences that shaped it.
