The chorus performs

Looking for a choral program that celebrates memorable music across the decades? This is the one for you. Join fellow music lovers to sing timeless classics from the 1920s and ’30s such as “I Got Rhythm” all the way to ’70s and ’80s hits like “I’ll Be There” and “Don’t Stop Believin’.”

Ernest Johnson leads the ensemble in arrangements of the hits you know and love. Songs may include favorites by George and Ira Gershwin, Duke Ellington, the Beatles, and others, selected by the conductor. (The final song list and musical arrangements are chosen to fit the specific vocal and musical abilities of the group.)

The experience is designed to entertain, challenge, and educate adult singers of all skill levels. Singers receive general instruction in vocal techniques that include exercises in healthy breath management for singing and improving your singing tone and range. Basic music reading instruction is included as music is rehearsed. Weekly voice part sectionals are available from 6 to 6:30 p.m. Rehearsals culminate in a free performance on June 8; reservations are required.

Johnson is a choral conductor and music educator who has worked with singers and musicians of all ages for more than 45 years. He was director of choirs at West Potomac High School in Fairfax County, Virginia, for 25 years, where he was twice honored as "Teacher of the Year.” His previous choral director positions include the Maryland Choral Society, the Fairfax Chorale, and the Heritage Presbyterian, and Aldersgate United Methodist Church Chancel Choirs in Alexandria. He was an adjunct professor at George Mason University, and currently is active as a guest conductor, teacher, and clinician throughout the area.

8 rehearsals (April 13 to June 1, note that the 5th rehearsal is on Tuesday, May 9 while the rest are on Thursdays) plus performance (June 8)
