Of the more than 400,000 service members buried at Arlington National Cemetery, several of the most unusual were interred in Section 1. Here rest the remains of a diverse cross section of U.S. service members who served in wars and conflicts going back to the American Revolution.

Join Jim Carr, U.S. Army Colonel (ret.) and current president of the Guild of Professional Tour Guides of Washington, D.C. on a walking tour of Section 1. Discuss headstone iconography and design and visit the graves of notable and colorful figures, including John Wesley Powell, a Grand Canyon explorer and a founder of the National Geographic Society; Hiram Bingham III or “Andean Jones.” discoverer of Machu Picchu; Gen. Jonathan Wainwright, who defended the Philippines at Bataan; Congressman Parren Mitchell, a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus; Dr. Anita Newcomb McGee, founder of the Society of Spanish American War Nurses; and a figure who looms large over the cemetery’s history: Gen. Montgomery C. Meigs, onetime Quartermaster General of the U.S. Army.
