Lost Civilizations: The Etruscans

The Etruscans were a powerful, influential civilization in ancient Italy. But despite their prominence, they are often portrayed as mysterious, unknowable people whose language and culture have largely vanished.

In this fascinating lecture, archaeologist and prehistorian Lucy Shipley presents a different picture. She delves into the ways in which the Etruscans traded with Greece and shaped the development of Rome. She also discusses how they influenced Renaissance artists and Romantic firebrands, colonialism and conquest, misogyny, and mystique.

Shipley illuminates Etruscan history with new archaeological evidence to give us a new perspective on an enigmatic people, revealing just how much we know about the Etruscans—and just how much remains to be discovered.
