Washington, D.C., is Indian land. The city is built on the traditional ancestral homelands of the Piscataway and Anacostan peoples. And since 1789, scores of Native American delegates representing a variety of tribal nations have traveled to the District to advocate for treaty rights, negotiate with the federal government, establish peace agreements, and bring attention to other issues.
Join Elizabeth Rule, director of the AT&T Center for Indigenous Politics and Policy at George Washington University, to explore the history and legacy of Native Americans in the nation’s capital. Rule, an enrolled citizen of the Chickasaw Nation, draws on her forthcoming monograph Indigenous DC: Native Peoples and the Nation’s Capital to lead a visual tour that highlights locations with Indigenous connections across the city. Among them are Georgetown’s Dumbarton Bridge, Congressional Cemetery, the Embassy of Tribal Nations, and sites of Indigenous activism and art installations.
She also discusses her digital publication, the Guide to Indigenous DC, which maps 17 sites of importance—including the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial, the White House, Analostan/Theodore Roosevelt Island, and the Capitol—in a free mobile app.
