By Max-Karl Winkler

The woodcut as a printmaking technique is almost as old as the printing press and has never lost its popularity as a medium of artistic expression. Smithsonian museum collections contain many examples of woodcuts, from Dürer in the 15th century to those of contemporary masters. Students learn both the classic materials and techniques of the multicolor woodcut as well as methods of color registration, ink mixing, and presentation of the final print.
